About Mobile

Mobile Alabama, home to around 200,000 people, is the only seaport in the great state of Alabama. Mobile began as a colony of France in 1702, with it's port offering a key trading post between the French and Native Americans. During the American Revolutionary War, Spain took control of Mobile until 1813, when the United States gained control. Alabama became a state in 1819, but would join the Confederacy during the Civil War. The Battle of Mobile Bay was one of the most famous naval battles during the Civil War, which resulted in a Union victory. World War II brought a large influx of people to Mobile in order to work in the shipyards and at Brookley Air Force Base, which closed in the late 1960s. In the late 1980s, the city began making improvements in their historical districts, as well as in the rest of the city.

Mobile features many historical areas, including both homes and churches from the antebellum period. Numerous museums have been created inside some of the important historical homes. Battleship Memorial Park is a very well known area in Mobile Bay, housing the World War II battleship, the USS Alabama. War memorials and other military items can be found there. The Mobile Botanical Gardens is also a well-known feature of the city. Other local attractions include The Gulf Coast Exploreum, a science center for people of all ages featuring an IMAX theater, and the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, which houses an aquarium on Mobile Bay.

The Brookley Complex, or Mobile Downtown Airport, is the largest complex for industry and transportation in the region. The Mobile Regional Airport has direct connections to five major airports in the nation, with many different airlines servicing there. Transportation is certainly not an issue in Mobile, with access to railroads, air travel, and travel by water from Mobile Bay into the Gulf of Mexico.

There are many cultures represented in Mobile, including French, Spanish and Creole. A good illustration of the different cultures can be found each year at Mobile's annual Carnival celebration. Mobile was actually the first place in the United States to have a Mardi Gras celebration, and their celebrations begin as early as November, and end at Midnight on Mardi Gras, just before Ash Wednesday. Parades and festivities mark the occasion each year.

Mobile, Alabama is a historical city with a wide array of fun for everyone!
